Ramp time breaks more shipments than flight time
Across eight monitored lanes, 71 percent of out-of-band minutes happened on the ground with the aircraft doors open or the truck parked.

Cargo holds run cool and steady. The apron does not. When we tagged every out-of-band minute in the sample network by phase, ground handling took 71 percent of them, and the flight legs took 6 percent. Customs and depot holds took the rest.
That distribution changes where you spend money. A better container helps on the ground, which is where the heat is. A faster flight does almost nothing.
The four windows that matter
- Uplift staging, from acceptance to loading. Outdoors at most stations
- Transfer between aircraft at a hub, often two ramp movements plus a warehouse
- Customs inspection, where power is rarely available
- Final mile, in a van that was not built for the profile
Each window has a different owner, and none of them owns the shipment end to end. The gap between owners is where the minutes accumulate.
What to instrument
Put the probe with the product and log the position of the shipment at the same cadence. A temperature record without location tells you something went wrong. A record with location tells you where to send the corrective action.
We ask carriers for a covered staging bay at three stations. Two agreed. At the third, we changed the routing in summer instead of arguing. The trace made that decision easy to justify to the sponsor, because the data showed 41 out-of-band minutes at that station across six shipments and none at the alternative.
The number to put in the review
Out-of-band minutes per shipment, split by phase, per station. It fits on one line, it points at a specific team, and it moves when someone fixes something. Most cold chain dashboards report excursion counts instead, which hides a 90 minute event behind the same tally mark as a 4 minute one.
